Frankincense Essential Oil: Is One Variety Better Than Another?

Posted by

The prices of frankincense essential oil vary dramatically.  A multi-level marketing (MLM) company might charge $96 for a 15 ml bottle, a little more than half an ounce.  The same frankincense essential oil can be sold for a profit for less than $15.

Frankincense comes from a resin produced from the Boswellia tree. The Latin name of frankincense denotes the geographical area where it's grown.  Boswellia carterii only grows in Somalia.   Boswellia sacra is native to the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen, Oman) and the northeastern part of Africa (Somalia).  Boswellis serrata is native to Northern and Central India.

The finest quality frankincense (Boswellia sacra) is a clear resin and is only grown in Oman.  It is processed exclusively for the Sultan's private use and is not exported to other countries.  The lesser quality, brownish tint resin from Boswellia sacra trees is processed for export.  This one is available in the US. It is not superior to other varieties  of frankincense.

All varieties of frankincense, no matter the Latin name, have potent anti-inflammatory properties.  All will serve you well.

Bypass the MLM companies.  Buy 100% pure frankincense essential oil from other reputable sellers.  There are many good companies who sell frankincense at a reasonable price.
